Birthday Cake and Robots

I've been working with some pretty interesting writers lately here's another pretty fun project with one of them. It's an illustration for his children's story. I love projects that give me a chance to illustrate cake because really, what's better than cake?

Hi Kim, I really enjoy the stuff you have been showing on your blog! Fabulous, thanks for sharing!!
I hope you don't mind but I can't help myself but post a question/suggestion (but only because I like it so much - great story telling/character, love the tonal play between the foreground and background).
Anyway, did you consider making the boys head a little bigger? (similar proportion to the kids in the Games illos previous) Might add a bit more central focus and avoid tension between the edge of the robot and the boy?

I continue to fall in love with your work! I love the central figure of the boy; his socks with stars are great and I love his face and missing tooth.

The background is amazing. There is so much to see. All the balloons and presents and rivets on the robot, not to mention the figures on the cake and all its layers.

Great work Kim!

Thanks, Mike! I can see what you mean about making the head bigger. I'll see what I can do.

Your choice of colors is incredible--I'm also really loving your line quality and textures. Overall, VERY nice work!
